HANCOCK COUNTY - The Maine State Police Troop J and other area law enforcement agencies began receiving several reports this afternoon from cellular phone users in the greater Hancock County area regarding a scam.
Area residents began receiving computer generated calls on their cell phones which stated that their debit or credit cards have been restricted or frozen. All of the affected callers, thus far, have had cellular phone numbers which begin with 266 in the 207 area code.
The automated message instructs the person to dial 1 and then to enter their debit or credit card numbers manually on their keypad. All of the calls received have come from a number using the area code "601."
It is important to remember that legitimate banks would never ask for personal information, such as a credit or debit card number, over the telephone. This is a scam.
