Man fails to report to jail

VASSALBORO - State Police is asking for the public's help in locating a Vassalboro man who failed to show up to begin serving a 3 1/2 year prison term. William Stein, 60, pled guilty in June to one count of gross sexual assault and four counts of unlawful sexual contact in Kennebec County Superior Court. The victim was a young child.

Stein was to report to the Kennebec County Jail on June 11 to begin his sentence. State Police, the Kennebec Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshal's Service have been looking for Stein for the past month and are now asking for the public's assistance. Stein is 6-foot-one, weighs 270 pounds, hazel eyes and brown thinning hair with a goatee and mustache. Stein's last known address was 6 Oxford Street in the China Lake Mobile Home Park in Vassalboro. Anyone with information on Stein's whereabouts is asked to call State Police in Augusta -- 624-7076 or 911 on a cell phone.
