The Maine Edge Criminal Mischief

Road rage + bow and arrow = felony

BANGOR – A man who allegedly brandished a bow and arrow during a road rage incident is facing felony threatening charges.
On Jan. 22, around 3:58 p.m., Officers John Robinson, Chris Blanchard and Doug Smith responded to a threatening call in the area of the Finson Road.
Several witnesses reported they were driving in their car on Union Street when they noticed a vehicle operated by Craig Foss, 40, of Holden, driving erratically. As the witnesses pulled alongside Foss, one of the young men yelled to Foss to “stop texting.” This prompted Ross to allegedly throw an object from his vehicle into the witness’ vehicle. Both cars ended up on the Finson Road when Foss exited his vehicle to confront the people in the other car, displaying a bow and arrow in a threatening manner, which prompted the call to police. No one was injured.
Foss was subsequently arrested and charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony, and driving to endanger.

Your fake ID is showing

ORONO – Employees of the 103 Ultra Lounge alerted police to a woman attempting to use a false ID over the weekend.
Officer Chris Watson was called to the night club on Jan. 23 around 10:38 p.m. An employee turned over a Virginia license that had been altered. The employee told the officer that a woman, later identified as Kelly Ramey, 20, of Orono, had attempted to enter the club twice by using the ID. According to police, the identification had Ramey’s correct name and picture, but had affixed plastic with a fake date of birth on top. Because her correct address was listed, police were able to contact her at Washburn Apartments and arrange for her to come to the station. She arrived the next day and reportedly admitted to using the license. Ramey was summoned for possession of false identification.

Filling you prescription for crime

OLD TOWN – A stop for a burned out headlight led to drug charges for an Old Town woman over the weekend.
Officer Brent Fournier was on patrol on Jan. 24 around 12:23 a.m., when he stopped a car with a burned out headlight.
While speaking with the driver, Nicole Klam, 22, of Old Town he detected the odor of alcohol. She initially denied drinking, but then told the officer she had consumed a beer. He administered field sobriety tests, which she passed. Officer Ryan Fitch arrived on scene and observed a glass marijuana pipe in her car. When Fournier asked her about it, she admitted she had the pipe and retrieved it for him. The officers searched the car and located a pill bottle with cellophane cigarette wrapper that contained four orange pills that Klam identified as Adderall, and she reportedly did not have a prescription for it.
She had more pills on her person and allegedly told police they were to help her study. She was summoned for possession of schedule W drugs and sale and use of drug paraphernalia.

Warning. Warning. Warning. Jail.

ORONO – Despite several warnings and Orono man still ended up going to jail after allegedly yelling and swearing at police officers.
On Jan. 24 around 1:56 a.m., Officer Chris Watson arrived at the 103 Ultra Lounge and saw a man later identified as Brian McGowan, 20, of Orono, covered in snow and being pointed at by an employee of the club. The employee told the officer that McGowan had been asked several times to leave, had been escorted from the night club and refused to leave the property. The employee said he was being removed from the night club and was pushed into a snow bank, which covered him with snow. Watson asked the employee if he wanted McGowan to be given a trespass warning not to return and the employee agreed.
Watson and Sgt. Scott Scripture spoke with McGowan, who denied causing any trouble. While speaking with police, McGowan began swearing and yelling at the Ultra Lounge employee. He was issued a warning for disorderly conduct and for criminal trespass and explained that he would be arrested if he came back onto the property.
McGowan left the area, but later in the evening, Sgts. Scott Wilcox, Scripture and Officer Dan Merrill were speaking to an employee when they heard someone speaking loudly. McGowan was on the sidewalk talking loudly about how he was waiting for a ride and that the police could “laugh it up.” He reportedly stepped back into the parking lot and Wilcox warned him to stay on the sidewalk. Instead, McGowan yelled loudly, “F—ing d—bag.”
He was then placed under arrest for disorderly conduct and taken to Penobscot County Jail.

Man kicks in door

HOLDEN – A Brewer man is facing several charges after he allegedly kicked in a door at a mobile home.
On Jan. 22 around 11:26 p.m., Officer Chris Greeley was called to a residence at the Cedar Haven Mobile Home Park. As a result of the investigation, he arrested Casey McElligott, 25, of Brewer at the Circle K.
He had apparently become upset over an impending breakup. During the investigation, McElliogott became increasingly upset and uncooperative and started banging on the window of the convenience store. He was placed under arrest and taken to Penobscot County Jail by Officer Rodney Gerald of the Brewer Police Depart. He was charged with disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

Slip ups

ORONO – Slippery conditions were at least part of the reason why a Limington woman was summoned for illegal possession of alcohol.
On Jan. 24 around 6:29 a.m., Officer Chris Watson was assisting Officer Dan Merrill and Sgts. Scott Wilcox and Scott Scripture with a large party. A woman walking out of the driveway slipped on the ice and fell. The bag she was carrying made a glass clinking noise. Watson helped the woman up and Scripture took the bag, which contained Smirnoff Cranberry Vodka and a shot glass. She was identified as Angelina Dapolito, 18, of Limington, and Watson noted signs that she had been drinking. She denied that the bag was hers but did admit to drinking and wouldn’t say where she consumed the alcohol.
She was issued a summons for illegal possession of liquor by a minor. While waiting on the sidewalk, she retrieved a pair of boots from the bag and put them on. Watson noted that they appeared to fit her. She left the bag on the sidewalk, and when the officer advised her she was forgetting her bag, she told him it wasn’t hers.

Pay attention to your surroundings

OLD TOWN – A man smoking pot reportedly didn’t notice the police officer outside his window when he was allegedly taking a hit off his marijuana pipe.
On Jan. 21, around 9:38 p.m., Officers Ryan Fitch and Mike Holmes were dealing with a noise complaint when they noticed a vehicle running with three people inside. The officers approached and saw the driver deeply inhaling from the pipe. As the officer knocked on the window, the man exhaled, and because the window was open the officer could detect the odor of burnt marijuana.
Fitch told the driver, later identified as Nathan Pete, 18, of Old Town, he was going to search the vehicle, at which point Pete gave the police two glass marijuana pipes and a baggie with a usable amount of marijuana. One of the passengers had a baggie with marijuana “shake” or residue on his person. Pete also had a set of brass knuckles on his person, something he reportedly told police he knew was illegal. One of the passengers, Derek Boyington, 18, of Old Town, told police that one of the pipes belonged to him.
Pete was summoned for carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a usable amount of marijuana. Boyington was charged with sale and use of drug paraphernalia.

Cause of death determined

HANCOCK - The State Medical Examiner determined that the Ellsworth man whose body was found in his partially burned Jeep on Jan. 25 died from smoke inhalation, police said.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office says the fire inside the passenger compartment of the Jeep Cherokee was started by Lyle Gibson. Investigators say Gibson, who was intoxicated, likely dropped lit matches on the front floor that ignited paper and trash. The fire, burned the front seat, floor and dashboard, and was out by the time it was discovered by a wrecker operator, who had been called to remove the vehicle.

Gibson’s body was found in the rear of the vehicle, behind the back seat.

The Jeep became mired in heavy snow after he drove onto the unplowed Simmons Pond road, with his wife, early Monday afternoon. Nichole Gibson left the vehicle to call the wrecker.

The death, which has been ruled an accident, was the state’s first fire death of the year.

When she opened the door, one man, later identified as Logan Wade, 30, of Brewer, had a metal baseball bat and raised it in a threatening manner while the other man, Lawrence Torbert, 36 of Eddington, stood in the doorway. The victim told police that apparently a relative owes him money. She informed the men that the relative was not at the residence and they eventually left.
Sgt. Michael Hashey located the men and the bat, and one of them indicated that a woman who lived in that apartment owed him money. When Hashey asked why he had the bat, Wade reportedly said “you never know what you’ll run into.”
Both were placed under arrest and taken to Penobscot County Jail. Torbert was charged with criminal threatening and Wade was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony.

Public Safety Stats for 2009

Courtesy of Steve McCausland of Maine Public Safety

Police said that 2009 was a very safe year on the state’s highways and inside Maine homes. There also were fewer homicides last year than in 2008.

Highway deaths - 2009 ended with 158 deaths on Maine roads, according to the Bureau of Highway Safety. That final number could change with any deaths this month that resulted from a crash in December. The 158 deaths were three more than the 2008 total of 155 deaths. Both 2009 and 2008 were the safest years on Maine roads in five decades. In 1959, 136 people lost their lives in Maine traffic crashes and that has been the safest year on Maine roads since World War II.

Fire deaths– The State Fire Marshal’s Office says 14 people died in fires during 2009. That number equaled the death toll for 1991 as the second safest year ever. The all-time low for fire deaths in Maine was in 2007 and 1995 when 12 people lost their lives in each of those years. The deadliest year for fire deaths was 1967 when 70 people were killed. During the 30 years between 1950 and 1980, an average of 49 people died each year in Maine fires.

Homicides – The final end of the year number was 26 homicides, as the death of a Portland man who died in late December has now been classified as a homicide. Portland Police continue to investigate the death of Than Yim, who died on December 20. Of the 26 homicides, State Police investigated 21 of them during the year. The 26 deaths were five fewer than the 31 homicides recorded in 2008. The deadliest year for homicides in Maine was 1989 when 40 deaths were reported. The safest year in modern times was 2000 when 11 homicides were investigated.

Hailing the cops

ORONO – A Milford man managed to garner the attention of police by reportedly flagging an officer down.
Officer Derek Dinsmore was on patrol in Orchard Trails on Dec. 31 around 11:30 p.m. when he saw a man near building three who appeared to be waving at the officer as though he wanted to speak with him. The man was reportedly holding a silver can. When the cruiser got closer, the man then ran inside the building.
Sgt. Scott Lajoie was able to catch up with the man and identified him as Nathan Curtis, 20, of Milford. He was still holding the beer can and was in possession of two other unopened cans.
He was summoned for illegal possession of alcohol by a minor.

Don’t drink and hitch (especially if you’re underage)

ORONO – It’s doubtful that anyone resolves to add court dates to their new year’s calendar, but that’s what a couple of area men did early New Year’s morning.
On Jan. 1 around 1 a.m. (yep, 1:00, 01/01/10) Officer Jason Zalva was on patrol when he saw a group of men hitchhiking on Main Street. He stopped and advised them that it was illegal to hitchhike after dark. He identified two of the men and determined that they had been drinking. He issued summonses to Joshua Legere, 19, of Alton, and Dana James, 20, of the University of Maine for illegal possession of alcohol by minors by consumption.

Don’t ask the cops if they’re looking for trouble. Just don’t.

OLD TOWN – If you ask a cop if he’s looking for trouble you may not enjoy the results, as a Bangor man learned early in the morning on New Year’s Day.
Officers had responded to the Riverfront Pub on Jan. 1 around 2:20 a.m. on an unrelated call, when they noticed a man who was reportedly passed out and leaning against the establishment. His friend told officers that the man was fine, but the officers checked on him. When he came to, he told the police he was fine and asked if they were “looking for trouble,” according to police. The man was identified as Jason Reaviel, 37, of Bangor, and continued to ask the cops if they wanted to fight. Officer Jim Fearon determined that Reaviel had bail conditions not to possess or consume alcohol. Reaviel told police he was aware of his bail conditions and reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol. He was placed under arrest.
Later, Reaviel asked why he was in handcuffs. When the officer explained about the violation, Reveal allegedly requested to have the handcuffs removed so he could “kick [the officer’s] ass.”
Once at the Penobscot County Jail, Reaviel refused to leave the cruiser and had to be removed by jail staff. He was charged with violation of conditions of release.

Off the road, under age, over the limit. Jail trifecta in play.

OLD TOWN – An Orono man went to jail after police determined he had crashed a vehicle after having a few too many Christmas Eve.
On Dec. 24, Officer Brent Fournier was on patrol when he came upon a vehicle that had driven off the road. The driver was identified as Chad Evinger, 18, of Orono, who allegedly admitted to consuming two or three beers. When asked to rate himself on a scale of one to 10 (one being sober and 10 being falling-down drunk) Evinger reportedly rated himself a “six.” Fournier administered field sobriety tests and then placed Evinger under arrest for operating under the influence. He was taken to the Old Town Police Department where his breath alcohol content rated a 0.12 percent. He was then taken to Penobscot County Jail and charged with operating under the influence.

Bangor Special Response Team charges three

BANGOR – Police investigation into electronic thefts have led to several men being charged.

On Nov. 24 2009, The Bangor Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team (SET) began an investigation into a large number of electronics thefts from Bangor area stores. The investigation pointed to a group of people from the Ellsworth area that was targeting electronic stores, stealing from them and then pawning the merchandise off at area pawn shops.

Working with the Brewer and Ellsworth police departments, Bangor police learned that these same individuals were suspects in thefts from Brewer, Ellsworth and Waterville. Through the course of the investigation, SET members found over $5000 worth of electronics were taken from stores in the area. Some of those items were recovered and returned to the stores. Further information gathered led SET to believe that the amount of merchandise and number of items stolen was far greater than that $5000.

Police arrested Micah Chakirelis, 25, of Ellsworth, and George Taylor, 29, of Bucksport; both were charged with class D Theft. Also arrested was Raymond Ireland, 25, of Ellsworth, who was charged with two counts of Class C theft and one count of class D theft. More charges pending.
