People on the Move: Sgt. Scott Hamilton

ORONO – On Dec. 1, Tpr. Scott Hamilton was promoted to sergeant of Troop E, which is based in Orono. His duties will change from that of a patrol trooper to a supervisory role, where he will oversee the seven road trooper in Troop E, approving their reports and ensuring the safety of other troopers.

“It gives me the opportunity to be a leader within the State Police and Troop E,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton has been a Maine State Trooper for 13 years. Prior to working for the Maine State Police he worked for four years at the Ellsworth Police Department and part time for Bar Harbor Police. Hamilton is the assistant commander for the Maine State Police Tactical Team. He is the lead instructor for defensive tactics at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and holds a third degree black belt in karate. He has also received several awards for his service to the Maine State Police.

“Realistically, we’re looking for someone with good leadership skills and ability, people skills – someone who can motivate people, and has very good organizational skills,” said Lt. Wesley Hussey, commander of Troop E. “He fit [the criteria] very well. He was already in a leadership position as assistant commander for the Tactical Team. In the State Police, when a sergeant is not working, the supervisory duties will fall to a trooper and Scott had done that. He has extensive training in defensive tactics and police training. He’s an instructor for defensive tactics at the [Maine Criminal Justice] Academy. He fit into that mold really well.”

Hamilton enjoys working for the Maine State Police.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.”
